Dr. Ali Maawy grew up in Nairobi, Kenya where he studied medicine for 2 years at the University of Nairobi. Prior to completing his medical degree, Dr. Maawy moved to the United States where he studied neuroscience at the University of Texas in Dallas. Dr. Maawy was accepted to the University of Texas Medical Center with an academic scholarship prior to completing his degree due to his outstanding academic achievements. He attended and graduated with honors from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas.
After graduation, Dr. Maawy completed his general surgery residency with an additional 2 years of research at the University of California in San Diego. Dr. Maawy then further sub-specialized in Surgical Oncology by doing a fellowship at the Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center in New York.
Dr. Maawy has a special interest in gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary and peritoneal malignancies. He has published and been a peer reviewer for multiple journals with a focus on pancreatic cancer, tumor targeted therapy and tumor imaging. During his training, Dr. Maawy received multiple research and academic awards.
In addition to performing the full-breadth of general surgery, Dr. Maawy performs complex surgery for hepatico-pancreatico-biliary cancers, gastric and esophageal cancers, adrenal malignancies, colorectal cancer, metastatic peritoneal cancers including ovarian cancer, melanoma and sarcoma in both the abdominal cavity and extremities. Additionally, Dr. Maawy also offers Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemo-perfusion (HIPEC) for peritoneal malignancies. Dr. Maawy is also adept and has specialized in robotic and minimally invasive surgery. Dr. Maawy is board certified with the American College of Surgeons.
