Surgical Associates of Corpus Christi
Surgical Oncology
In the United States, cancer is the second leading cause of death, exceeded only by heart disease. 1 out of 4 deaths the United States is due to cancer. Cancer care has become significantly more complex and advanced, leading to a need in further specialization and treatment. With improving treatments and better understanding of the disease, the decline in the death rate has been steady over the past 26 years, overall dropping by an average of 1.5 % per year between 2008 and 2017.
At the core of cancer care is multimodal treatment. This often involves surgery, immunotherapy and chemotherapy, as well as radiotherapy. Surgical oncology is the specialization in complex cancer surgery that is done in careful conjunction with medical oncology and radiation oncology to give you the best possible chance of a cure.
